Cornering and the Apex: The Fundamentals of the Racing Line

The racing line is one of the most important concepts in motorsport. It determines speed, stability and rhythm on the circuit. A precise understanding of cornering is essential to unlock the potential of a Porsche GT car.

Corner entry begins far on the outside so as to create the largest possible corner radius. The braking point has to be set clearly before the car is stabilised and aimed at the apex. Vision plays a central role: the driver should always look where they want to go, not where they currently are.

The apex is the innermost point of the corner that the driver touches. An early apex causes the car to run too wide and become unstable at the exit. A late apex, by contrast, allows a higher exit speed and provides more stability. For beginners a late apex is ideal because it offers more margin and makes the car easier to control.

Corner exit is the moment when the car is straightened and accelerated. A clean transition between turn-in, apex and exit is decisive for fast lap times. Less steering angle means less friction, which in turn allows higher speeds. A consistent line choice produces repeatable lap times and reduces tyre wear.
